課程概述

Course Description
This integrated language course aims to enhance students’ English proficiency at the high-intermediate level. The course is also intended to develop in the students an interest in learning English and to improve students’ critical thinking and presentation skills. Students will be introduced to diverse topics that are relevant to college life, including education, entertainment, pop culture, technology, career, etc.
The course will balance lectures with classroom activities involving four skills (reading, listening, writing, and speaking). These class activities include show and tell, group discussion and presentation, Q and A, film viewing and critique, and language games. Every three-hour session will begin with exercise in vocabulary and grammar, continue with class discussion of assigned reading materials, and end with task-based speaking and listening practices. Frequent writing exercises are designed to relate the course material to the students’ own life experience.
In addition to sharpening the students’ English skills, after taking this course, students are expected to become critical readers and thinkers, clear communicators in multiple contexts, and active analysts of contemporary cultures.

(The syllabus may be updated now and again. The definitive version will be distributed in the first class.)
